Veruca Fawley is Okay with Being Your Musical Girlfriend

When she meets me at a New York coffee shop, Veruca Fawley seems a little out of place in a 1940's style wiggle dress and heels that make her even taller, but she sits down with a quiet, effortless cool that helps you completely understand why she's been chosen to play two muses in the span of two years. Even if one of them was herself.

Vanity Fair:

I watched Weird: The Al Yankovic story last weekend and haven't stopped thinking about it since. Everyone playing a real life figure is wonderful, but your Madonna is a real standout.

Veruca:

We have so many cameos! I didn't even know how many real life figures we had popping up in scenes until I watched the final cut, let alone who we got to play them, so that's very high praise.

Vanity Fair:

Are you a Madonna fan?

Veruca:

Not as big of one as I should be as a person born in th 80's, but Madonna is such a cultural institution that there so many of her songs are just...engrained in everyone's psyche. As soon as you hear the beat drop for Material Girl, you know the words. Madge was a bit too risque for my very Catholic father and grandmother, but I do remember being very enamoured with her outfits. Videos like Express Yourself and Vogue had very old Hollywood visuals and lyrics so I remember really liking those.

Vanity Fair:

So your impression wasn't something you perfected over the years?

Veruca:

Oh no, I definitely have a few celebrities I do have an impression of, but they're mostly personal favorites I love so much I actually tried to mimmick them as a kid. My Madonna was more the result of diving into old footage as well as channeling the vibe of a lot of sort of Long Island girls I knew because vintage Madonna defintely has that sort of New York cool girl vibe.

Vanity Fair:

That makes you nailing it all the more impressive. Do you sing in the film?

Veruca:

I don't. Neither Dan or I do and we keep joking that it's a very good thing.

Vanity Fair:

Now you and Daniel (Radcliffe) have worked together before, correct?

Veruca:

Yes! My first movie with him was one of my first films ever and it was such a lovely experience. He was obviously already a pro at that point and he was just so warm and kind and patient. Dan has a real way of making you feel comfortable, both on a personal level and as an actor. He's never afraid to try new things both on set and in his career in general. I think he's extremely underrated as an actor.

Vanity Fair:

He always speaks fairly highly of you too. Have you heard he had a crush on you during your first film?

Veruca:

(laughs) I have heard that and it's extremely flattering but Dan has a lovely long term partner that was actually around for a lot of the film. She's something of an Al superfan so it was great having her on set. She even helped fill in a few of the gaps when Al wasn't with us.
